In Memory of Bonnie Belle: 1994-2013
Bonnie Belle was a beagle x jack russell mix and my best friend/shadow for 13 amazing years. We first adopted her in 1999 when she was 5 years old from our local humane society. Before she was found by the humane society, she was wandering the streets until she got hit by a truck and then dragged herself to a nearby vet clinic (yes, the vets literally found her dragging herself towards their office door). She had multiple dislocated disks, a broken jaw, and a broken right paw but somehow miraculously recovered. This is actually where she received her name. The vet tech who was helping her recover wore "Bonnie Belle" lip gloss and Bonnie would always lick it off.
Although she had all of those injuries, she still lived up to her breeds' reputations. She was extremely energetic and liked to test her intelligence by getting into things she shouldn't (backpacks, lunch boxes, trashcans, etc.), but she was also the sweetest and most affectionate dog you'd ever meet. She loved to give kisses and snuggle up against you for some quality cuddle time. You knew she was happy by the little purr noise she would make...to this day we still have no idea how she made that noise (haha). But one of her strongest qualities to me was her determination. She went through many health issues throughout her life and near the end of it, but she never let them stop her. She would always put the family ahead of herself and always made sure that we were happy.
Sadly we had to put her to sleep on June 13, 2012. Her aging 18 year old body just wasn't holding up and, along with frequent accidents in the house, it became extremely painful for her to move. Although her passing was extremely sad for me, I remember the look she gave me and the way she licked the tears streaming down my face as the time came. It was almost as if she was telling me "My time has come and I have accepted that. Please don't be sad. Thank you for being my friend." I know she walked across the rainbow bridge and is now happily running around without any pain, chasing a mouse or just acting silly like she did when she was younger. Thank you Bonnie Belle for everything you did. I'll never forget you!
